The tribal women of Ulidih, upset over the rampant drug trade in their area, have decided to take to the streets in protest. An anti-drug campaign has been organized with local political support.
JAMSHEDPUR – In response to the unchecked drug trade in their area, the tribal women of Ulidih, Mangaon, have decided to fight back.
During a meeting held at the closed tribal middle school premises, they planned a protest against the local drug problem.
BJP leader Vikas Singh attended the meeting, expressing his full support for the women’s cause and pledging to participate actively in the anti-drug campaign.
The women recounted how, a few days prior, they had already protested against the illegal drug trade at the Ulidih police station under Vikas Singh’s leadership.
Although police patrolling led to the temporary cessation of drug transactions at the tribal middle school, the dealers simply moved to other locations.
As a result, while the school surroundings have become more peaceful, the criminal activities elsewhere have only escalated.
The women reported the open trade of cannabis, heroin, brown sugar, and an illegal lottery business, which is heavily affecting the daily wage earners in the Ulidih area. Many households are facing starvation as all their money is being spent on drugs, even leading to the children’s school enrollment being revoked due to unpaid fees.
The women feel that the law and order situation has worsened and it’s up to them to take to the streets for their own protection. Vikas Singh, who was informed about the issue, contacted the local police station and was assured of a swift response.
Singh, supporting the tribal women’s concerns, suggested that if the situation doesn’t improve, an outrage rally will be conducted post the Kanwar Yatra. This protest, planned near the statue of Lord Birsa Munda behind the tribal high school campus, will see the local women armed and rallying against the drug menace in the area.
