Bengali Organizations Rally in Jharkhand for Language Preservation

Jharkhand’s Bengali groups stage protest demanding recognition and preservation of their language, responding to perceived erasure.

JAMSHEDPUR – A significant demonstration unfolded in front of the Jamshedpur district headquarters on Tuesday.

Sixteen Bengali organizations from the Kolhan division united in this pre-announced protest.

Their aim was to address the perceived diminution of the Bengali language in Jharkhand and to push for its revival.

They took issue with the removal of Bengali inscriptions from several railway stations in Kolhan and the waning support for Bengali education throughout the state.

Language in Crisis

Aparna Guha, a member of the Banga Bandhu organization, voiced concerns over what she sees as a crisis for the Bengali language in Jharkhand.

According to her, the absence of Bengali teachers and educational materials has led to a growing number of Bengalis in the state losing connection with their mother tongue.

Actions and Consequences

The demonstrators handed over a demand letter to the Chief Minister via the district administration.

They warned of more intense agitation if their demands are not met soon.

With the loss of their language, the Bengali community fears a loss of cultural identity, highlighting the importance of their fight.
