Portuguese Delegation from Alto Minho Visits Jamshedpur for Urban Services Collaboration

Portuguese delegation from Alto Minho visits Jamshedpur to collaborate on urban services under EU-funded IURC program, focusing on waste management.

Jamshedpur – A three-member delegation from Alto Minho, Portugal visited Jamshedpur from April 18th to 21st, as part of an ongoing collaboration between the two cities under the European Union-funded International Urban and Regional Cooperation (IURC) program.

The cities recently signed an agreement to mutually cooperate on principles of solid waste management, public administration, and the exchange of best practices in various urban services.

The delegation, comprising Mr. Constantino Azevedo, Ms. Sandra Estevenes, and Ms. Celestina Oliveira de Barros, met with officials from Corporate Services, Tata Steel, and TSUISL to discuss city management practices, focusing on solid waste management, water management, and wastewater.

Site visits were conducted to observe urban services such as roads, parks, and waste management facilities in Jamshedpur.

During their stay, the Portuguese team examined Jamshedpur’s value chain of solid waste management, visiting facilities involved in door-to-door collection, source segregation, waste processing, and waste disposal.

They also toured water treatment facilities, wastewater treatment plants, the Citizen Service Center (JUSCO Collaboration Centre), and the Integrated Command and Control Centre.

The delegation commended Tata Steel’s TSUISL for their exceptional management of key urban services such as door-to-door garbage collection, old waste removal, and RDF facilities.

They also praised the company’s performance in key indicators like Non-Revenue Water (NRW) and satellite observation of raw water parameters.

As a result of the visit, Alto Minho will support Jamshedpur in implementing deodorization technology at a waste management plant, with the possibility of replication at other plants.

In return, Tata Steel will share their best practices in Organizational Public Administration Systems.

The IURC program will continue fostering collaboration between the two cities through information exchange, participation in related programs, and promotion of cooperation in national and international events.
