Dobo Bridge naming sparks differences between tribal and Kurmi communities

Jamshedpur: The naming of the Dobo bridge that links Jamshedpur city to Seraikela district has become a point of contention between the tribal and Kurmi Mahato communities.

The tribal community desires to name the bridge after Birsa Munda, while the Kudmi Mahto Samaj has erected a statue of Raghunath Mahato and named the bridge after him.

The disagreement has been ongoing for the past three days.

The Kurmi Mahato community installed the statue of the great hero of the Chuad rebellion, late Raghunath Mahato, and named the bridge after him.

However, according to the local tribal community, the bridge was named after Dharti Aba Birsa Munda by the Gram Sabha at the time of its construction.

The local tribal community leaders said that Kurmi Mahto Samaj forcibly removed that board and installed the statue.

On Thursday, the tribal community re-inaugurated the bridge in the name of Dharti Aba Birsa Munda and installed a board to that effect.

Tribal community leaders claimed that the people of Kurmi Mahto community have forcibly installed the statue without talking to the Gram Sabha.

Meanwhile, according to the Kurmi Mahato community leaders, the name of martyr Raghunath Mahato has been insulted, and they have opposed it.

They said that even today, the administration had planned talks between the two sides, but the tribal community put up a board in the presence of the administration.

They claimed that the administration remained a mute spectator, and if the issue is not resolved through talks, the Kurmi Mahato Samaj will be forced to resort to further agitation.
