India to observe 14th Aug as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, said today that in memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th August will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

New Delhi: India will observe 14th August as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day every year.

The PM made this announcement in a series of tweets Saturday on 14th August.

He said: “Partition’s pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th August will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.”

In another tweet, he added:”May the #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay keep reminding us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment.”

14th August is the day Pakistan celebrates as its Independence Day. This was the day when India was partitioned on the basis of religion and a Muslim-majority country of Pakistan was carved out.

In the process, somewhere between one and two million people died and more than 15 millions were displaced and turned into refugees. Millions of women were raped and forcibly converted too.

The horrors of violence unleashed on India subcontinent remains one of the darkest chapters in the history of humanity and serves as a reminder of the colonial brutality wreaked upon ancient nations and communities by the colonial and imperialist forces.
