RANCHI – Jharkhand Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking urgent action against large-scale Bangladeshi infiltration in the Santhal Pargana region.
In his letter, Marandi demanded that illegal Bangladeshi migrants occupying government and tribal land be identified, placed in detention centres and deported without delay. He named Pakur, Rajmahal, Littipara, Mahespur and several other assembly segments as areas of concern.
Marandi pointed to official voter data between 2019 and 2024 to argue that the population of a particular community had grown at a disproportionately rapid pace in these constituencies. He described the trend as a serious threat to national security and to the identity of the region’s tribal population.
The letter also alleged repeated violations of the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act. According to Marandi, members of the Muslim community have systematically encroached upon government land, grazing land and ancestral tribal property in the region.
He further claimed that forged genealogies, fake Aadhaar cards and fraudulent birth certificates were being used to help these settlers establish themselves in the area. Moreover, Marandi alleged that sections of the state’s ruling coalition and local administration were extending political protection to the infiltrators in order to secure a captive vote bank.
“Illegal infiltrators are being given political shelter to protect a vote bank, and this must stop,” Marandi said in the letter, according to its contents shared with the media.
The BJP leader has raised several specific demands before the home minister aimed at halting the trend. He urged the Centre to intervene and take appropriate steps against the alleged infiltration and land encroachment.
Besides his letter to the Union Home Ministry, Marandi has in recent weeks also targeted the state government on other issues. He recently criticised the administration over a clash involving students in Giridih, and separately questioned a CID probe into recruitment exam cancellations, demanding a CBI inquiry instead.
In addition, the opposition leader has repeatedly accused the state government of inaction on law-and-order matters. However, the ruling alliance has rejected similar allegations from the BJP in the past, framing them as part of a broader political contest ahead of the next assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the BJP has also questioned why the chief minister has stayed away from direct talks with protesting students on separate issues in the state.
