JAMSHEDPUR – On the occasion of World Oceans Day, the Department of Geography at Karim City College hosted an online webinar themed ‘Catalysing action for our Oceans and Climate.’

The keynote speaker was Dr. Ghazal Salahuddin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

The event saw participation from Dr. Ale Ali, Head of the Geography Department, Principal Dr. Mohammad Reyaz, Assistant Professors Dr. Farzana Anjum, and Dr. Pasarul Islam, as well as over 70 students.

Dr. Ale Ali commenced the webinar with an introductory speech, providing a historical overview of World Oceans Day, which was first proclaimed at the Global Forum in Rio de Janeiro on June 8, 1992.

Following the introduction, Principal Dr. Mohammad Reyaz delivered the welcome address.

Dr. Ghazal Salahuddin, the guest speaker, emphasized the significance of World Oceans Day in raising awareness about the vital role of oceans and the need for global conservation efforts.

He highlighted that oceans absorb the majority of heat from greenhouse gases, contributing to rising ocean temperatures.

Dr. Salahuddin also discussed various human activities damaging the oceans, such as garbage disposal, runoff, and overfishing, and stressed that reducing direct waste disposal into the oceans is crucial for their preservation.

The session concluded with a question-and-answer segment led by Dr. Pasarul Islam, where Dr. Salahuddin addressed students’ queries.

The webinar was coordinated by Dr. Farzana Anjum.
