Dumri MLA vows to join students’ assembly march on August 10

RANCHI – Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha supremo and Dumri MLA Jairam Mahto sat on a day-long waterless fast on Sunday at the old assembly complex here.
The fast was held in support of students agitating at Jaipal Singh Stadium against alleged corruption in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission. Mahto urged the state government to act quickly on the students’ demands.
He said the students had been protesting for a long time over their demands. The government, he added, needed to treat the matter seriously and resolve it without delay.
Mahto also made clear that he would personally join a proposed march to the state assembly scheduled for August 10. His party has separately announced its support for the students’ planned march.
The JLKM chief’s fast and his announcement of joining the assembly march have given fresh momentum to the student movement. Similar tensions over examination processes have surfaced elsewhere in the state in recent months, including a dispute at a Jamshedpur college over exam centre allocation and a separate petition to the governor over alleged university exam irregularities. A prolonged standoff at Ranchi University had earlier ended after negotiations between authorities and student groups.
Student protests over recruitment and registration issues have also been reported in other parts of the state, including a stir by Dhalbhumgarh students and a related demonstration by East Singhbhum students over school registration.
