Odisha Plant Expansion Boosts Capacity to 8 MTPA, Rs 27,000 Crore Investment

Key Points:

• India’s largest blast furnace commissioned at Tata Steel Kalinganagar

• Phase II expansion increases plant capacity from 3 MTPA to 8 MTPA

• Eco-friendly design includes advanced features for optimal steelmaking

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel has commissioned India’s largest blast furnace at its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha, marking a significant milestone in the country’s steel industry.

The new blast furnace, with a volume of 5,870 m3, showcases cutting-edge technology and eco-friendly design.

Equipped with four top combustion stoves, it optimizes fuel consumption in hot metal production.

A dry gas cleaning plant maximizes energy recovery from by-product gas, a first for Tata Steel.

The world’s largest Top Gas Recovery Turbine, with a 35 MW capacity, will recover an additional 10% of energy.

An evaporative cooling system reduces water and power consumption by approximately 20%.

T.V. Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel, expressed his enthusiasm for the project.

"This expansion strengthens our position in high-end steel segments and showcases our engineering prowess," he stated.

The Phase II expansion, costing Rs 27,000 crore, increases the plant’s capacity from 3 MTPA to 8 MTPA.

New Facilities and Sustainable Practices

The expansion includes a Pellet Plant, Coke Plant, and Cold Rolling Mill with advanced technologies.

These additions focus on value-added products, operational efficiency, and reducing carbon footprint.

"The new facilities align with our commitment to sustainable industrial growth," an industry expert commented.

Tata Steel Kalinganagar has earned recognition for its advanced manufacturing practices.

It was named a Global Lighthouse by the World Economic Forum, highlighting its technological innovation.

In 2024, the plant received the ResponsibleSteelTM Certification, affirming its sustainability efforts.

Community Impact and Safety Standards

The Kalinganagar plant contributes significantly to regional socio-economic development.

Tata Steel’s community programs have positively impacted over 200,000 people in surrounding areas.

The company maintains high safety standards, making Kalinganagar one of the safest steel plants globally.

"Our ‘Safety First’ culture ensures the well-being of our workforce," a Tata Steel spokesperson emphasized.

With this expansion, Odisha has become Tata Steel’s largest investment destination in India.

The company has invested over Rs 100,000 crore in the state over the past decade.

This project aligns with India’s vision for self-reliance and sustainable industrial growth.
