Save Jemco Maidan Campaign Gains Momentum

Local leaders fight to preserve Jemco Maidan for public use, highlighting its century-old significance to the community and potential takeover by a local company.

JAMSHEDPUR – A significant move to protect Jemco Maidan in Jamshedpur from alleged takeover attempt has been initiated. The Jemco Maidan Sangharsh Committee, led by Anand Bihari Dubey of the East Singhbhum District Congress, has approached Jharkhand’s Chief Minister, Champai Soren, with a plea for intervention.

During the meeting, Dubey emphasized the historical use of the maidan by the community for over a century. The area, frequented by thousands daily for sports and recreational activities, faces a threat from a local company’s activities, which could restrict public access.

He elaborated on the company’s actions, noting the deliberate damage to the ground through heavy vehicle movement. This tactic, aimed at deterring the public from using the space, could lead to the company’s easier acquisition of the land.

The potential takeover of Jemco Maidan, Dubey warned, would adversely affect the lives of approximately one lakh residents across twelve to fifteen nearby settlements. The loss of this communal space could severely impact the community’s well-being.

In response, Chief Minister Soren has pledged to take decisive steps for the community’s benefit. The locals say that the call to develop Jemco Maidan as a sports facility underscores the need to preserve it for public use, ensuring its accessibility for generations to come.
