Hamas’ Unprecedented Attack Kills 22, Wounds 70; Global Backing for Israel’s Right to Defend Itself

Israel faces massive assault by Hamas, leading to death toll of 22 and over 70 serious injuries; PM Netanyahu declares state at war; global leaders express support.

DESK – In a significant escalation of hostilities, Israel found itself in a state of war, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The development came after an unprecedented infiltration by Hamas militants into Southern Israeli towns on Saturday, leading to the death of at least 22 people and wounding over 70. Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has dubbed its counter-operation as “Iron Swords.”

The magnitude of the attack also led to numerous rockets being fired at southern and central Israel. Magen David Adom, the national emergency medical service, has reported that the number of casualties may still increase. European leaders, including German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and French President Emmanuel Macron, have voiced their unequivocal support for Israel’s right to self-defense.

Global Solidarity with Israel

European leaders have roundly condemned the acts of violence perpetrated by Hamas. Germany, France, and Italy have all affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself and condemned the intensification of violence by Hamas.

Regional Impact and Casualties

Ofir Liebstein, head of the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council, was killed during the onslaught. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated, “The State of Israel will win this war,” reiterating the country’s determination to secure its territory.

The IDF’s Counter Operations

The IDF has been striking targets in the Gaza Strip and deploying special units to protect Israeli citizens. The operation, named “Iron Swords,” is aimed at neutralizing the Hamas threat.

Hostage Situation

Hamas claims to have captured five IDF soldiers and 33 other hostages. However, the IDF has not yet verified these reports.

Urgent Advisory

The IDF has advised residents to stay close to protected areas, especially those living close to the Gaza Strip.

An emergency cabinet meeting has been called to assess the situation further.
