Oppenheimer Movie Criticized for Disrespectful Portrayal of Hindu Texts

The film "Oppenheimer" has sparked a backlash among the Hindu community for its perceived disrespectful handling of the revered Hindu scripture, "The Bhagavad Gita".

DESK – Hindu academics are prepared to provide resources and insights if Hollywood creators need advice on sensitively addressing Hinduism-related matters, stated Rajan Zed.

Zed also suggested that Hollywood executives undergo training in religious and cultural sensitivity to better respect the sentiments of audiences and communities when developing new projects.

Despite Hollywood’s freedom to produce films on holy texts like the Bhagavad-Gita, or deities such as Lord Krishna, the outcomes should be respectful and dignified, Zed emphasized.

Hindus welcome Hollywood’s exploration of Hinduism, provided it is approached seriously and respectfully, not merely to fulfill a storyline.

Free speech and creativity are highly valued among Hindus, as much as by anyone else, Zed further noted, highlighting that mishandling religious traditions could lead to misappropriation of sacred teachings and respected symbols.

It’s inappropriate to touch symbols of any faith, irrespective of their size, Zed clarified, reminding that Hinduism, with approximately 1.2 billion followers, is the third-largest and oldest religion in the world.

As theoretical physicist Julius Robert Oppenheimer was deeply impressed by Hindu texts’ wisdom, it’s clear that director Christopher Nolan and Universal Pictures should have shown maturity when dealing with the holy scripture, according to Zed.

Rajan Zed, President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, urged the director and Universal Pictures to revise sequences referring to Hindu literature, ensuring they are portrayed respectfully and responsibly.

Zed stated that Hindus find the trivialization of the holy Bhagavad Gita and Lord Krishna in the movie "Oppenheimer", which premiered on July 21, deeply disturbing and offensive.
