Hundreds of thousands of people are rallying and demonstrating in anti-Bolsonaro demonstration and for democracy in Brazil. They reacted angrily to the riots by attacking the country’s presidential palace, Supreme Court and Congress.
According to the reports on different media channels, the crowd chanted slogans in Sao Paulo, the country’s largest city, demanding the imprisonment of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
In a large rally in Sao Paulo, protesters marched with large banners reading ‘We are democracy’ in Portuguese.
Hundreds of supporters of hard-right politician Bolsonaro attacked the country’s Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court last Sunday.
The country’s new president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, accused Bolsonaro of inciting his supporters to carry out the attack. The incident took place in the capital Brasilia a week after he was sworn in.
On Monday evening, 77-year-old Lula visited the damaged Congress building, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court, along with the country’s governors.
He condemned and promised to punish the culprits. Later, about one and a half thousand people were arrested in this incident.
But Bolsonaro said the allegations against him were “baseless”. At the same time, he highlighted his position in favor of the right to ‘peaceful’ protest.
The presidential election was held in Brazil last December. Bolsonaro was defeated by the leftist Lula. Before Lula was sworn in, he left the country for Florida on December 30.
After the riot, Bolsonaro’s wife Michelle Bolsonaro said that Bolsonaro was hospitalized with stomach pain.
Agencies citing sources close to the family, said his condition was ‘not serious’.
Bolsonaro was stabbed in 2018.
Since then he has been suffering from occasional abdominal pain.
